- To broaden and enrich participation in literature
- To increase the number of people engaged in creative writing
- To promote literary readership and to encourage more people to engage with contemporary
literature - To develop further Galway’s literary reputation
- To develop and promote a good partnership approach to work
- To enhance the existing good relationship between Galway Local Authorities and the Arts Council
Project Outline
This Galway City Council Writer in Residence initiative will commence in September 2006. Actively engaging a large number of people in the project the City Arts Office will facilitate the project through the City Library Service and through existing community and arts groups.
The writer will devise a project programme in consultation with the City Arts Office and the Library Service. The age groups and social profiles of the participating groups will be decided in the consultation process, however it is expected that youth, schools, adult and retired groups will form the human landscape of the residency.
The geographical scope of the residency covers the entire city of Galway from Ballybane to Bearna with occasional guest appearances in County Galway.
The Writer in Residence will be based at the Galway City Council Arts Office at Ballybane Resource Centre, in Galway City. The city and countywide resources of the Galway Library network will also be available.
The project will run for a six-month period, however the residency may be divided into working blocks of 3-4 weeks at a time.
The Writer will be employed on a contract basis to deliver the Writer in Residence project and will be paid a contract fee of €16,000 in total. As this is a contract for services this sum will not be taxed at source. Many writers qualify for tax exemption and therefore tax affairs are to be dealt with by the writer himself/herself.
It is envisaged that 50% of the writer's time will be devoted to project work and 50% to the writer's own work.
The project is jointly funded by Galway City Council and the Arts Council.
Galway City Council will provide additional funding for project costs.
