Insurance

The City Council maintains a number of insurance policies to protect and safeguard its assets from the effects of financial loss due to their damage or loss. They protect against risks to council property such as buildings, vehicles and plant, office equipment.

The City Council also procures insurance against loss due to liability claims by third parties for damage or injury caused by the negligence of the City Council, its employees or agents acting on its behalf.

This type of insurance covers incidents such as damage to third party property by City Council employees, injury to members of the public caused by tripping, incidents on City Council owned property or injury on City Council owned playgrounds.

It should be noted however Galway City Council does not accept liability of any actions of its employees without first investigating all claims made.

Risk management is a strategic and essential part of effective and efficient management and planning in reducing exposure to costly litigation and delays on projects.

Galway City Council operates a Risk Management Forum that comprises of all senior staff from the four city council directorates who review procedures and processes in order to embed risk management into its culture, processes and structure to ensure that resources are maximised and efficiently used.
