Waste
Improving resource efficiency through reducing the wastage of materials, consumables, water and energy is a necessity for most businesses.
Over the last few years, Galway City Council, in conjunction with Galway County Council, have worked with businesses in Galway under the Local Authority Prevention Demonstration Project (LAPD) to assist them in reducing their waste generation, their energy usage and their water consumption.
If you would like to get involved in a similar project, would like assistance on how to manage your resources more effectively or would like to arrange a waste seminar for your employees, call Sharon on (091) 536564 or e-mail sharon.carroll@galwaycity.ie. The website www.greenbusiness.ie has lots of useful tips and advise on how to improve environmental practices within your business and/or organisation. Information on waste regulations can be found here.
Litter
- If you are the owner or the person responsible for a place to which the public has access, you are obliged to keep the place litter free, regardless of how the litter got there.
- Also, the owner or occupier of a property which can be seen from a public place is obliged to keep it free of litter. Basically, any outdoor area on your property that is visible from a public place must be kept litter free.
- A local authority can instruct the occupier of a business to take measures to prevent the creation of litter by his/her business within 100 metres of the business premises. Such measures may include for example the removal of litter and/or the provision of litter bins.
- Occupiers of businesses situated beside a public road and within a speed limit area are responsible for keeping the footpath outside their business free of litter, regardless of how it got there. It is an offence to remove litter from a footpath by seeping it or placing it onto the road.
Greenmap
Does your business deserve a place on Galway’s Green Map?
Green Map Galway is a locally produced chart of the city that identifies, promotes and links environmental, social and cultural amenities. The map, which was launched in 2007, represents a holistic representation of the places and things that people value in their communities and shows, amongst other things, green areas, cycle paths, interesting walking routes, quiet spots and cultural sites. The project was initially funded by the Environmental Project Agency and partly organised by researchers in the Department of Geography, NUI Galway, members of Galway City Council and the citizens of Galway. The map can be viewed at www.galwaygreenmap.ie and examples of other green maps from around the world can be viewed at www.greenmap.org.
Following on from the success of the initial draft, Galway Green Map would now like to gather information on green businesses and eco-building around the city. If you are interested in putting your business or building on the map, please contact Sharon Carroll on (091) 536564 or e-mail sharon.carroll@galwaycity.ie with the name of your business, its location and a brief note describing your business and why it should be on Galway’s Greenmap.
