Energy conservation

If each of us becomes aware of our own power when it comes to energy efficiency, and use it properly, we can collectively make a big difference. To ourselves, to our pockets, and to the environment. By taking individual responsibility and changing our behaviour in small ways every day, we’ll help save energy while we save money too.

10 tips to get you started:

1. Use compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) instead of traditional bulbs - they use 20% of the energy and last up to 15 times as long.
2. Eliminate standby energy usage. Many appliances use energy after being turned off when they are left plugged into electrical sockets. To avoid this, simply unplug your battery chargers and other plugs or adapters when they are not in use. Standby energy use accounts up to 10% of total energy consumption worldwide.
3. Buy 'A' rated kitchen appliances. They cost less to run and over time will give you considerable savings on your electricity bill.
4. Wait for your dishwasher to be full before you swicth it on - a half one uses the same energy as a full one.
5. Switch off lights when you leave a room - energy is wasted lighting unoccupied rooms.
6. Don't overfill your kettle - only boil as much water as you need.
7. Check your tyre pressure - a car with correctly inflated tyres is more fuel efficient.
8. Walk or cycle for short journeys - it costs nothing and is good for you.
9. Turn your heating down to a comfortable 20 degrees celsius - lowering your thermostat by 1 degree will knock 10% off your heating bill.
10. Insulation, insulation, insulation. Consider improving the insulation in your home where possible.
