Green Schools
Green schools is an international project designed to encourage and acknowledge whole school action for the environment. Green schools offers a well defined controllable way for schools to take environmental issues from the curriculum and apply them to the day to day running of the school. This process helps pupils recognise the importance of environmental issues and take them more seriously in their personal and home lives. Green schools is both a programme and an award scheme. The programme can be adopted by any school using the guidelines given in the Green Schools Handbook. Activities are carried out on a variety of environmental themes, including ltter, waste, energy, water and transport.
The Green Schools Awards Schemes helps schools to:
· Improve the school environment
· Reduce litter & waste
· Reduce fuel bills
· Increase environmental awareness
· Involve the local community
· Gain local publicity
· Create links with other schools in Ireland and internationally.
The programme is managed by An Taisce - The National Trust for Ireland and run in co-operation with Galway City Council in Galway city.
36 schools in Galway City are now registered with the programme and, to date, 29 flags have been awarded across the city.
