School Art Competition

Primary Schools
Every year, Galway City Council promotes and sponsors an anti-litter poster competition for primary schools. Winning entries are used to illustrate an Environment Calendar, which is distributed free of charge around the city. The calendar contains information on waste management, as well as monthly tips on how to reduce household waste.

The aim of the competition is environmental litter awareness, so participation rather than art is the key to success. Over the last seven years, participation in the competition has steadily increased, from 278 entries in 2001 to over 3000 entries this year. This huge level of participation is due, in large part, to the active support for and promotion of the event by school principals and teachers. This year, 23 primary schools in Galway City entered the competition with a number of schools achieving 100% student participation.
