How to make an environment complaint

Persons who wish to make an environmental complaint relating to waste, water, litter, air or noise pollution in Galway City can do so in 3 ways.

1. By e-mail: Email your complaint to environment@galwaycity.ie

2. By post: Download and complete the environmental complaints form and send it to: Environment Department, Galway City Council, City Hall, College Road, Galway

3. By phone: Call the Environment Helpline on 091 536400. The Helpline is staffed from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm Monday -Friday. From 5pm to 9am the following day (week days) and at weekends, calls are automatically set up to route to an out of hours call centre. These calls, unless emergency, will be dealt with on the next working day by an appropriate member of staff.

In making a complaint, it is important to provide as much information as possible, including the nature of the complaint, the time of the incident, the location of the incident and return contact details.
Provision of your name and address is desirable as, otherwise, Galway City Council will not be in a position to report back to you regarding the matter complained about. Moreover, the Council may need to contact you in order to obtain more information about the matter and/or directions to the site in question.

If you wish your details to be kept confidential, this must be specifically indicated in your written complaint. Galway City Council will respect your wishes in this regard within the powers provided under the Freedom of Information Act 1997.

Further information on who you should contact and what to do to help resolve environmental problems can be found in the following leaflet How to make an Environmental Complaint published by the EPA. An Irish language version of the leaflet is also available An Chaoi le Gearan Comhshaoil a Dheanamh.
