Litter bye-laws in Galway City

Advertising material
The handing out of advertising leaflets and flyers in the street and in public places, the placing of flyers on car windscreens and the general dissemination of handouts is a substantial source of litter that is totally avoidable.  Generally, people accept the advertising material to avoid discussion or an argument and discard it shortly after.  The flyers can also blow off car windscreens once the wipers are used.

To help alleviate the problem of litter caused by advertising flyers in the city, Galway City Council adopted bye-laws in 2003. These bye laws state that ‘ the distribution of advertising material to the public for commercial purposes within the administrative area of the Council is hereby prohibited’.

Presentation of waste
Taking a few small precautions in the way you store and present your refuse for collection will help enormously in preventing the creation of litter. You should put out refuse for collection on the morning of the collection and not on the day or night before. The longer it is left out for collection the more likely it is to attract the unwanted attention of dogs, cats and birds. It is an offence to dispose of your household refuse in street litter bins.

Bye-laws were adopted by Galway City Council in 2000 outlining the regulations governing storage and presentation of waste in Galway City.
