Litter Pollution Monitoring System
The Litter Pollution Monitoring System provides an accurate picture of litter pollution countrywide and accurately measures changes over time.

The system was developed by the Department of the Environment, Heritage and Local Government and Tobin Consulting Engineers in consultation with local authorities. Under the system, local authorities carry out surveys – a minimum of between some 30 and 600 surveys per annum depending on population size - to determine the extent, composition and causes of litter pollution in their areas. The data obtained from the system enables them to provide more effective litter management planning for their areas, to assess the effectiveness of their litter management strategies and to ensure the optimum allocation of its resources to tackle litter. It provides vital information to the Department on the national picture regarding litter pollution. For more information, check the website www.litter.ie

The system provides answers to three key questions:

1. How littered is the country at local and national level?
2. What are the main constituent elements of litter pollution?
3. What are the main causes of litter pollution?

The 2009 Litter Monitoring Results for Galway City can be downloaded here.
In summary, the main constituent elements of litter pollution in Galway City are cigarette-related litter (47%), chewing gum litter (21%) and packaging-related litter (14%).

Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) Litter League
Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) was set up in 1996 as an alliance of companies who believe that litter has a significant impact on our economic well-being. The main sources of our prosperity – tourism, foreign direct investment and our food industries - all depend on an image of Ireland as a clean and green island.

A major IBAL initiative has been the Anti Litter League. Ranking the performance of each local authority in combating litter in a league table format, has delivered tangible results. Now co-funded by the Dept of the Environment, the league covers over 60 towns and city areas.

In the most recent IBAL Litter League survey, Galway City ranked 45th and was deemed to be ‘moderately littered’.
