Smokeless Fuel Order
The Air Pollution Act, 1987 (Marketing, Sale & Distribution of Fuels) Regulations, 2000, designated Galway City as a 'Smoke Free Zone'. This introduced a ban on the marketing, sale and distribution of bituminous coal within Galway City since 1st October 2000. It is illegal to sell, market or distribute banned fuels within the restricted area and it is only permissible to sell and distribute smokeless coal. Galway City Council has a duty to enforce the regulations and failure to comply will result in on the spot fine and/or possible prosecution by Galway City Council under the Air Pollution Act 1987.
The ban on smoky coals with a high smoke and sulphur-dioxide content is intended to improve air quality by replacement with smokeless fuels in urban areas. This ban specifically relates to bituminous or smoky products i.e. Polish or Texan Coals, Singles, Doubles & Slack.
There is a large selection of high quality smokeless products available. Smokeless coals will ensure better air quality, and improved health in our Urban Environment. If you are able to purchase a banned fuel within the City then this means that the trader is flouting the law.
As a householder, you play an important role in maintaining the city's air quality by the fuel you burn.
