Water
Water Pollution in the Environment Section is mainly controlled under the following two acts:
European Communities (Quality of Bathing Waters) Regulations, 1988
Bathing water analysis is carried out weekly from May to September on all Galway City beaches to monitor pollution.
The public analyst laboratory in the grounds of UCHG carry out testing of physical and physico-chemical samples. Biological testing is carried out by the microbiology labs belonging to UCHG. The samples are collected by City Council staff and left into these labs for analysis.
Local Government (Water Pollution) Act, 1977 and its amendments
The above act provides the legislation for the monitoring by the local authority of waters and discharges of trade effluents and sewage effluents and other matter to waters.
