In addition to designated international and national conservation areas, there are other areas within the city boundary, where there are habitats of local ecological importance.
Merlin Park Woods:
Woodlands containing mature broad- leafed trees
Located: North and South of Merlin Park Hospital, Dublin Road
Menlough Woods:
Broad-leafed woodland
Located: Adjacent to Menlough Castle on the eastern side of River Corrib
Dangan Wood:
Planted broad-leafed woodland.
Located: Extends from N59 to the River Corrib to the south of Dangan and Technology Park.
Terryland Forest Park:
Young urban forest of native broad-leaved trees pockets of wetland vegetation.
Located: Both sides of Terryland River for approx. 4 km from River Corrib towards Castlegar
Coolagh Hill (excluding area designated for Outer Bypass Road):
Limestone pavement and Menlough turlough.
Located: East and north east Menlough village
Doughiska
Limestone pavement .
Located: East of city
Ballindooley Lough
Freshwater lake , two smaller lakes and seasonally flooded grasslands.
Located : Adjacent to Headford Road (N84) 4 km north of city
Ballagh
Blanket Bog.
Located : East of Tonabrocky
Cappagh
Blanket Bog.
Located : Between Cappagh and Ballymoneen Roads
City Canal System
Aquatic flora and fauna.
Located : Western part of the city and one artery to the east of the Corrib River at Newtown-Smith.

Small lake adjoining residential development
