Voluntary Housing
Voluntary Housing is housing provided by Approved Bodies to people who are not in a position to provide housing from their own resources.
These units are in addition to the units provided by the City Council.
If you are appointed as a Tenant of a Voluntary Unit, you pay your rent directly to the Approved Body and you are removed from Galway City Council’s Housing Waiting List.
You cannot purchase this property in the future from the Approved Body.
You can, however, still apply for Affordable Housing once you meet the criteria for the Affordable Housing Scheme. You are asked as a Question as part of your Housing Application Form if you are interested in this type of Housing.
As the Tenancies for a number of these Voluntary Units are nominated by the Approved Bodies, a person may also wish to apply directly to the various Approved Bodies.

Voluntary Housing Capital Assistance Scheme
This Scheme allows funding for the provision of small-type accommodation for example for the elderly. The Local Authority has explicit nomination rights to one-quarter of all individual tenancies in new projects and one tenancy in every four thereafter.
At least half of the tenancies will be given to people who are nominated by the Approved Body who are included or have been accepted for inclusion in the most recent Local Authority Housing Assessment of Needs. The remainder of the units will be given to persons freely nominated by the Approved Body.
Rental Subsidy Scheme
This Scheme assists Approved Bodies in providing family-type accommodation. Three-quarters of these units must be let to qualified households.
