Licence for Holding of an Outdoor Event
Under Section 231 of the Planning and Development Act, 2000 and Part 16 of the Planning & Development Regulations, 2001 a licence is required in respect of the holding of outdoor events. A licence can be completed in conjuction with Galway City Council or from an independent body.
An outdoor event that comprises of an audience of 5,000 or more must apply to Galway City Council for a Licence.
A fee of €2,500 applies and is chargeable only when the event being held is mainly for profit or gain.
The City Council shall not make a decision on an application earlier than 5 weeks after receipt of the application.

Pre-Application Discussions
A person who intends making an application, may, with the agreement of the local authority or any prescribed body (Chief Superintendent of the Garda Siochana, Western Health Board or Galway County Council) enter into pre-application consultation to discuss the submission of the application.

When to Apply
A Licence application must be submitted at least 16 weeks prior to date of event or, in the case of an application for a number of events at a venue in a period not exceeding one year, at least 16 weeks prior to the holding of the first event.
How to give Notice of the Event
Notice of the event must be published in one local and one national newspaper within the period of 2 weeks prior to applying for a licence.
Galway City Council may require that an additional newspaper notice be published where it considers that the notice given is inadequate for the information of the public.
Submissions and Observations
Any person may make a submission or observation in writing to the City Council in respect of an application within 5 weeks of receipt of the application by the City Council.
The City Council shall not make a decision on an application earlier than 5 weeks after receipt of the application.
