Development Concept for Ardaun
Galway City Development Plan 2005-2011 and Galway County Council 2003-2009 Development Plan include settlement strategy commitments to the development of an area to the east of the City straddling both jurisdictions.
These commitments relate to an area generally contained within the area bounded on the Northern boundary by the proposed new N6, on the Southern boundary by the existing N6, on the Eastern boundary by the N18 and on the Western boundary by the City. This area has become known as Ardaun.
In a joint initiative Galway City Council and Galway County Council invite interested parties to tender for the preparation of a Development Concept Study for this area.

Background
The current development strategy for Ardaun is contained in the recommendations from the Galway Transportation and Planning Study GTPS.
The GTPS study area included Galway and its hinterland, an area of about 30km radius of the City. The recommendations of this study which included both settlement and transportation options have been adopted by both Galway City Council and by Galway County Council and incorporated in their respective Development Plans.
The current concept is that Ardaun will develop into a self-sustaining corridor, where opportunities for achieving a mix of uses will be maximised in order to contain journeys and travel and where it will be possible, owing to critical mass to have a dedicated public transport system. This will include for the facilitation of key road projects, promotion of rail options, bus priority measures, improvement for cycling and pedestrian facilities.
The purpose of the proposed Development Concept study is to develop this and further concepts for Ardaun, including as described above, having regard to changes that have taken place since the adoption by the respective councils of the GTPS.
