Guide to the Application Process for a Temporary Road Closure
It is the policy of Galway City Council to accommodate and grant temporary road closures wherever possible. The application should be made to Galway City Council a minimum of 5 weeks prior to the proposed date of the temporary road closure in order to allow sufficient time for processing of the application. For a full list of the conditions relating to a Temporary Road Closure Application, please refer to the schedule attached to the application form.
A temporary road closure may be granted for:
- The carrying out of road works
- The holding of a road race or other events
- The demolition of a building
If you wish to close a road you must complete an application form, which can be obtained from:

The completed application form should then be returned to the Transportation & Infrastructure Section, at the above address, by post, fax or in person to the public counter (9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to Friday).
Please ensure that the application form is accompanied with all the necessary documentation and the appropriate fee.
The following fees will apply with effect from 1st May 2010 for costs incurred by Galway City Council for the temporary closing of roads-
- Scale A (local, small scale closure): €600
- Scale B (widespread, large scale closure): €1,150
- For closures of more than 1 day + €200 per day after Day 1
- Extra fee shall be applied where Pay & Display parking is affected
- Additional charges may be applied upon consideration of the application
Payment Methods
Payment of the fee may be made by, cash, cheque or credit card.
If the application is successful, the applicant must ensure that the Ambulance, Fire Services and the Gardai are notified of the closure.
