Initiatives

Galway City Council are involved in a number of initiatives to improve waste management practices in Galway City.

Local Authority Prevention Network
Galway City Council actively particpate in the Local Authority Prevention Network. This network builds on the success of the Local Authority Prevention Demonstration (LAPD) project which was completed in 2009.
For LAPD, Galway city Council, in conjunction with Galway County Council assisted households, businesses and public sector bodies to improve their environmental performance by focusing on waste prevention, energy conservation and water conservation. The programme demonstrated that waste prevention is possible and that prevention is a viable and realistic approach to environmental management.
If your household, community, organisation, school or business would like to get involved in a waste prevention project, contact Sharon on (091) 536564 or e-mail sharon.carroll@galwaycity.ie.

Stop Food Waste
The STOP Food Waste programme is funded under the EPA National Waste Prevention Programme (NWPP). Waste prevention is the preferred waste management option in Ireland. By not generating waste, we can eliminate the need to handle, transport, treat and dispose of waste. We can also avoid having to pay for these services.

In light of the significant issues arising from the disposal of food waste, and the realisation of the costs associated with this, the NWPP Prevention Plan 2009-2012 set out to promote food waste prevention and home composting.

This programme is aimed initially at the householder. We hope to provide you with comprehensive information about the food we waste and how to prevent this through RETHINKING how we shop, store our food, cook it and reuse the leftovers. When this has been done, we will provide you with information on all forms of composting as well as links to any programmes that may be occurring in your area.

In the next few years we aim to get involved with the retail and wholesale sectors and help them reduce the food waste that they generate. This will involve other programmes funded under the NWPP including, among others, the Green Hospitality Award (GHA) and the Local Authority Prevention Network (LAPN).

Waste seminars
Galway City Council hosts waste seminars and workshops throughout the year. If your group, community, business or school would like to arrange a seminar on waste (or on any environmental) topic or if you are a household that would like advice on how to manage your waste better, call (091) 536564 or e-mail sharon.carroll@galwaycity.ie.
