Recycling
Over 2/3 of all household waste can be recycled. It is important that all waste that can be recycled is recycled.
In Galway, we recycle about 50% of our waste. Although this is one of the highest recycling rates in the country and above the national average of 25%, there is still significant room for improvement.
So let’s lighten our grey bins - help the environment and save money.
The following items can be recycled in Galway:
In your green bin: Paper, newspaper, magazines, cardboard, milk and juice cartons (tetrapak), plastic bottles and containers, drink cans, food tins.
In your brown bin: All organic material, including cooked and raw food (everything from stale bread and spaghetti bolognese to chicken bones and cheese!), cardboard, old pizza delivery boxes, newspaper, tissue paper, garden waste, leaves, grass.
At the bottle banks: Glass jars and bottles.
Please segregate the glass according to colour – this is important for the recycling process. No ceramics, tiles, mirrors, window glass, pyrex or drinking glasses should be placed in the bottle banks. This glass is processed in a different manner and can affect the quality of the recycling glass.
At the Galway City Council Recycling Centre:
Glass jars, glass bottles, clothes, cooking oil, waste engine oil, paint, car batteries, household batteries, CFL bulbs, fluorescent tubes, small timber items, large hard plastics (toys, basins, buckets, garden furniture etc.), waste metals (bicycles, buggies, toys) and WEEE (waste electrical and electronic items – this is anything with a battery or plug and includes everything from kettles and fridges to watches and lamps).
Through Galway City Council Bulky Goods Collection: Furniture, including tables, wardrobes, couches, mattresses. WEEE, including washing machines, fridges, cookers.
Through shops, schools and recycling schemes:
