The Recycling Story
In Galway City, green bin waste is initially taken to the Galway City Council depot in Liosbaun Industrial Estate. It is then transported to ReGen Waste in Newry where the waste is sorted according to type before it is distributed as a raw material for recycled products.
The destination of each waste type varies and is dependant on the markets for recycled materials. All outlets are approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before any load leaves the site for further recycling or processing.
The level of contamination can determine the destination for the recycling. The cleaner and better segregated the material the more choice there is in outlets and a higher possibility for processing closer to the original source of waste.
