Waste Regulations and Enforcement
A number of legal requirements must be met in relation to the disposal and recovery of waste.
These include:
- Waste Management Act 1996, as amended
- Protection of the Environment Act, 2003
- Waste Management (Packaging) Regulations 2007
- Waste Management (Collection Permit) Regulations 2007, as amended
- Waste Management (Facility Permit and Registration) Regulations 2007, as amended
- Waste Management (Environmental Levy) (Plastic Bag) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2007
- Waste Management (Movement of Hazardous Waste) Regulations 1998
- Waste Management (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) Regulations 2005, as amended
- Waste Management (End-of-Life-Vehicles) Regulations 2006
- Waste Management (Batteries and Accumulators) Regulations 2008
- Waste Management (Tyres and Waste Tyres) Regulations 2007
- Waste Management (Food Waste) Regulations 2009

Galway City Council has responsibility for the enforcement of these waste management regulations, including management and investigation of complaints and ensuring producer responsibility and compliance under the various regulations.
The enforcement role in Galway City Council is carried out by authorised officers, appointed and conferred with powers under the Waste Management Acts 1996, with the aim of ensuring compliance with the law.
