Waste Facility Permits
Under section 39 of the Waste Management Acts, 1996 - 2003, large scale waste facilities must have a waste licence from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) .
A number of activities are exempt and instead require a waste facility permit issued by a local authority.
Waste facility permits are issued for smaller waste management facilities such as:
· Recycling sorting centres
· Car dismantling facilities
· The filling of sites using soil and construction and demolition waste.
Galway City Council issues waste facility permits under the Waste Management (Permit) Regulations 1998. The regulations lists the activities subject to Waste Permit (Article 4).
It is an offence to deposit waste in a facility that does not have a relevant waste permit or licence.
Permitted facilities undergo routine inspections and must adhere to strict codes of practice.

Galway City Council keeps a Regsiter of all facilities that have been issued with a waste facility permit.
How to apply for a waste facility permit
· Download application for a waste facility permit
· Complete the application form in full. You should contact the Environment Section in Galway City Council on (091) 536400 or at environment@galwaycity.ie if you need any clarification as incomplete applications cannot be processed.
· Documents to be attached to your application:
- Copy of newspaper advertisement
- Copy of site notice
- Site plan outlined in red, showing location of site notice emission points and sampling points
- Location map
· There is a fee of €254. This can be paid by cheque or by postal order. You should not send cash in the post. You will be billed for renewal thereafter.
Submissions and inspections of applications
The application and all associated information are available for inspection at the offices of the Environment Section, Galway City Council. Any person can make a written submission in relation to a Waste Facility Permit application.
Galway City Council must allow 21 days to elapse between the receipt of the application or additional information requested and the grant or refusal of the permit.
