Leakage Control
A leak can arise from:
- Damaged pipeline connections, flanges and fittings
- Worn valves
- Flooded floats (ballcocks) on water tank or cistern valves
- Corroded pipe work and tanks
One of the easiest ways to test for leaks is to conduct a 'night use test'.
To do this you need to turn off all water-using equipment and read the water meter last thing at night and first thing in the morning.
If the readings are not the same then there is a leak.
You can also check if the leak is within the building or external.
To do this, repeat the readings with the stopcock turned off. If the readings are the same, then the leak is after the stopcock. If the readings are different, the leak is between the meter and the stopcock.
If you find a leak, take action immediately, this leak could be costing you money.
You are responsible for repairing leaks on your property, but Galway City Council is responsible for repairing leaks on the mains supply leading to your property.
