'Fáilte Romhait Ar Ais' to the Volvo Ocean Race from Galway City Mayor and Manager
11 March 2010Both the Mayor and City Manager of Galway City welcomed the announcement today of the return of the Volvo Ocean Race in 2012. The announcement was made jointly by An Taoiseach, Brian Cowen,T.D. and the Chief Executive of the race organising committee, Knut Frosted, at a press conference in Dublin.
Mayor of Galway Cllr Declan McDonnell welcomed the news of the return of the Volvo Ocean Race,
"On behalf of the people of Galway City, I have to say that I'm delighted with the news. We showed last year that the people and city of Galway is capable of creating a world-class welcome to a world-class event and we look forward to the 'Volvo', as people in Galway call it, coming back. I would like to congratulate everyone associated with Let's Do It Galway on their successful bid and can assure them of both my and my fellow councillors whole-hearted support and assistance as we prepare for 2012," said Mayor McDonnell.
Galway City Manager, Joe MacGrath, joined with the Mayor in congratulating John Killeen and the Let's Do It Galway team on their success,
"Everyone in Galway is enormously proud of the work that Let's Do It Galway has done in securing the final leg of the 2012 Volvo Ocean Race for Galway. We look forward to continuing to work closely with them and with the Volvo Ocean Race in preparing the city. This is a tremendous vote of confidence in the city of Galway and Galway City Council is committed to continuing to work with everyone to ensure that 2012 will more than equal 2009 with a spectacular finish to the race."
Deputy Mayor of Galway City, Cllr Peter Keane and Director of Services, Tom Connell represented Galway City Council at the announcement of the finish of the VOR 2012.
