At the Irish Council for Social Housing National Community Awards Ceremony on Wednesday 29th September 2011 in Galway, Peter Triest Housing Association from Galway was the outright winner in the "Housing for People with Disabilities" category.

The awards were initiated in 2004 to recognise the work being done by the various Statutory and Voluntary Organisations to provide housing for the vulnerable in our society.

The Peter Triest Housing Association has been developing housing projects in Galway City and County for the past twenty years for people with an intellectual disability. On Wednesday night at the Conference dinner, the Peter Triest Housing Association was declared the category winner for their project which was recently completed at Leargan, Knocknacarra, by O'Malley Construction Company. This project was developed under Part V of the Housing Act 2000 in co-operation with Galway City Council and the Brothers of Charity Services who provide the ongoing support to the tenants in their daily living. The Architects for the project were McCrossan, O'Rourke & Manning, Dublin. Funding for this project was allocated by the Department of the Environment under the Capital Assistance Scheme.

The Housing Project is built at two locations and provides homes for twenty people in a mixture of one and two bedroom apartments and houses which have a range of special features, including lifts, hoists and assistive technology for those with physical or sensory disability to support people to live as independently as possible.

The citation in the award reads as follows,

"Recognising excellence in design, management,
community development and sustainability."
