Work on the Martin Junction Upgrade Project commenced in February 2022.

Works undertaken to date include have comprised of mainly underground works and include:
• Significant drainage works.
• Services diversion e.g., Communications, ESB.
• Public lighting.
• Construction of Retaining Wall at the boundary of Durabhán Estate.

The project is over 50% complete and is now progressing to the surface type works including:
• The installation of Roadside kerbs.
• Provision of footpaths and cycle lanes.
• Road surfacing.
These elements of the works will progress quite rapidly over the next month and there will be more of an appreciation for the progress on this project and the final layout will start to become apparent.

Ducting and preparatory works for the traffic signal installation is in progress and installation of the lights themselves will commence once the majority of surface works are complete. The final phase of the works will consist of significant landscaping of the junction.

There have been some delays to the programme as a result of industry wide supply chain issues related to the war in Ukraine. There has also been further delays due to rock being encountered on site. Rock was expected, however the hardness of the rock has been greater than anticipated and as such, has been slower to break and excavate on site.

We would like to thank local residents and business and everyone using the junction you for your patience while this project is underway.

The replacement of the roundabout with a signalised junction will provide an enhanced and safer pedestrian and cycling friendly environment, enhanced public transport facilities through the junction. It will also connect Roscam and Doughiska to the Galway Clinic and provide for sustainable future development of the Ardaun area where up to 4000 housing unit are to be provided for.

    Galway City Council would like to provide an update on progress of the Martin Roundabout junction upgrade. The objective of the scheme is to:

    • Provide an enhanced and safer pedestrian and cycling friendly environment, connecting Roscam and Doughiska to Galway Clinic and Ardaun;
    • Support the future development of the Ardaun Local Area Plan area;
    • Provide enhanced public transport facilities at the junction.

    What’s happened so far Funding to progress the project as Phase 1 of the Ardaun Transport Upgrade was secured from the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund and the National Transport Authority in November 2018. The preliminary design stage began in 2019. In July 2019 Galway City Council initiated a public consultation process inviting the public to make submissions in respect of the proposed upgrade. In response to these submissions the preliminary design was amended where appropriate.

    Next Steps

    Martin Junction is now at detailed design stage with construction programmed to start later this year. Residents will be notified through local media and on galwaycity.ie when construction will commence.

  • Figure 01 - Location Map
    Martin Roundabout is located on the eastern outskirts of Galway City at the intersection of regional roads R446 (Old N67) dual carriageway and Old Dublin Road. It is bounded by the Roscam (to the south), Doughiska (to the north-east) and Arduan (to the north) residential areas. Arduan, represented by the hatching above, has been designated as a Major Urban Housing Delivery Site under Rebuilding Ireland – an Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness. The proposed upgrade of existing Martin Roundabout is part of Phase 1 of the Ardaun Transport Upgrade, necessary to support the future development of this area.
