What is the role of the Council?
Galway City Council, as a local authority, performs two roles:
- Representational Role
- Operational / Executive Role
The Representational Role is performed directly by the elected members of the Council.
The Operational / Executive Role is performed by the Council staff, under the leadership of the City Manager and The Management Team with responsibility for a range of services.
- Housing
- Planning
- Roads
- Water supply and sewerage
- Development incentives and controls
- Environmental protection
- Recreation facilities and amenities
In addition to the functions outlined above, a fundamental role of democratically elected local government is the representation of local communities, voicing local concerns and responding to local needs.
There are 18 elected members who are elected from three local electoral areas:
- Galway City East - 6 Councillors
- Galway City Central - 6 Councillors
- Galway City West Ward - 6 Councillors
The Councillors are elected for a period of five years following local elections.

Who is the Mayor of Galway City?
The Mayor is elected from the membership of the council at a statutory meeting of the City Council which is held in June each year.
The current Mayor is
Councillor Pearce Flannery
Pearce Flannery represents the Galway West Electoral Area.
He was educated at Garbally College, NUI Galway, GMIT & University of Limerick.
He is a successful self-employed businessman and is the founder of the acclaimed Pragmatica organisation. He is a member of the board of the international automotive advisory group 'Autopolis'
He is a former winner of the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award and of the Marketing Person of the Year award and was nominated as one of Irelands Top 100 Entrepreneurs by Irish Entrepreneur magazine.
Pearce was honoured with a Fellowship of the IMI in 2010
As an author he has written a number of books including 'Grabbing the Oyster!' from which he donated all profits to Childline.
He won his seat at the first attempt gaining the highest first preference vote of any Fine Gael candidate across Galway city. He was elected Deputy Mayor of Galway in 2016.
He is a member of:

He is currently a member of the University Governing Authority of NUI Galway - Údarás na h'Ollscoile Gaillimh
Vice Chairman of the NUIG Academic Planning and Research Committee.
NUIG Standing and Strategic Planning Committee.

Chair of the Strategic Planning Area committee.
Pearce is happily married to Órla and has three children, Eoghan, Meabh and Daithí.
