Ably led by our Hon, Sec, Jameen Kaur, our Steering Committee compiles
the Fairtrade City Application Form and sends it off to Fairtrade
Ireland.
June 17th
The Make Galway A Fairtrade City campaign was officially launched
at the Spanish Arch, covered by the Connacht Tribune and Galway
Independent.
May-June July 2005
Shops, businesses, schools, restaurants, cafes, bars, groups and
individuals are canvassed by committee members to support the
campaign. Their names are listed on our ‘Support” webpage.
May 25th 2005
Amnesty volunteers run a Fairtrade Produce Day for City Council
Staff at City Hall.
April 7th 2005
First ‘Make Galway A Fairtrade City’ meeting takes
place at Amnesty Shop. A Steering Committee is formed and a campaign
action plan developed to get Galway to meet the criteria for award
of the Fairtrade City title.

Oxfam propose forming a committee to launch a campaign to make
Galway a Fairtrade City. Following discussions invitations are
issued by Amnesty International (Galway) to a meeting to set
up a steering group.
March 2004
Sponsored by Oxfam Felipe Miza Castro, a coffee grower from Guatemala
visits Galway City Council and a Fairtrade Produce Day is held
at City Hall for Councilors and Staff.
September 2003 Galway City Council adopts Fairtrade Policy:
§ Purchasing Fairtrade tea and coffee for use in City Hall.
§ Encouraging caterers to use Fairtrade products for events in City
Hall.
§ Encouraging other organisations in the City to use Fairtrade products
§ Promoting the sale of Fairtrade products in retail outlets throughout
the City.
December 2002
Oxfam and the City Council organise a Fairtrade Tea/Coffee morning
at City Hall for Councilors and Staff.
September 2002
Colin Roche of OXFAM gives a presentation on Fairtrade to Galway
City Council Environmental Strategic Policy Committee. The committee
decides to endorse Fairtrade.
