Galway City Council welcomes two U.S. Mayors/ Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe ag cur na mílte fáilte roimh bheirt Mhéaraí as Stáit Aontaithe Mheiriceá

In the coming week, Galway City Council will welcome visiting Mayors from two of the United States most important cities.

Mayor of Boston Martin Walsh

On Monday (22nd September) Mayor Martin J. Walsh of Boston will pay a courtesy call on Galway City Mayor, Cllr. Donal Lyons at 3.00pm in City Hall. Mayor Walsh has extensive Galway roots with both his parents natives of Connemara.

The Mayor of Galway, Cllr. Donal Lyons will welcome Mayor Walsh to City Hall on Monday afternoon

"On behalf of the citizens of Galway. We want to welcome him to Galway city and say how proud we are of his achievement in becoming Mayor of Boston," Mayor Lyons said this week.

Mayor Walsh will be in Galway city and county for a number of days and will be accompanied by Ms Lorrie Higgins, the Mayor's girlfriend, Mr. Gene O'Flaherty, Corporation Counsel, City of Boston, and former State Representative, , Sergeant Detective Winnie Cotter, Boston Police Department and MrsMary Walsh, the Mayor's mother at City Hall on Monday.

Mayor of Seattle Ed Murray

Later in the week Mayor Ed Murray will lead an eighty strong group of visitors from Galway's Sister City of Seattle. Mayor Murray arrives in Galway on Thursday (25th September) and will be in Galway throughout the weekend attending Civic events as well a Guest of Honour at the 68th Galway Oyster Festival.

Mayor Murray was elected Mayor of Seattle in January 2014 following a long career in Washington State Senate where he was a strong advocate for fiscal reformer and for human rights. He was one of the driving forces behind Washington's Marriage Equality Laws which was enacted in 2013. He married his long-term partner Michael Shosiaki in August last year. Mayor Murray will bring his human rights background to bear when he addresses the Law Faculty of NUI Galway on Friday morning (26th September). On Friday afternoon, Mayor Murray will pay a courtesy call to City Hall followed by a reception which will also be attended by more than forty members of the Seattle Police Department Pipe Band. Later that evening Mayor Murray and Mayor Lyons will jointly open the 68th Galway Oyster Festival at the Spanish Arch and on Saturday Mayor Murray and the Seattle Police Department Pipe Band will take part in the traditional Oyster Festival Parade.
