Galway City Council Install Flood Defence at The Spanish Arch

Galway City Council have installed a state-of-the art flood defence mechanism known as an AquaDam at the Spanish Arch in advance of expected high tides this week.

A water-filled temporary flood barrier system which can be used on level surfaces for perimeter flood protection, the 80 metre dam extends from Wolfe Tone Bridge to the Spanish Arch. Galway City Council expects the new system will reduce overall flood defence costs, including that of any necessary clean-up.

The AquaDam flood barrier has proven successful in flood prevention and management in other cities around the world during high tide events and the ease with which it can be deployed makes it an efficient anti-flooding measure. This versatile temporary structure has been filled with water from the River Corrib and will remain in place until the threat of high tides recedes next week.
