'The Gathering' Effect Continues as Galway City Council Opens 2015 Funding Round for Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora

Galway City Council is delighted to announce that applications for funding are now being sought under the Community Tourism Initiative for the Diaspora. This initiative launched last year builds on the community involvement legacy of The Gathering 2013. The Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, officially launched this year's funding support recently. The initiative is a joint partnership between Fáilte Ireland, IPB Insurance and the 31 Local Authorities.

Announcing this year's funding, Minister Ring emphasised:

"The Gathering brought communities together and many local communities wanted to continue to build on its impact by organising small festivals to reach out to the diaspora. Small in scope, many of these festivals would not be eligible under Fáilte Ireland's national and regional festivals schemes. Thanks to the support of IPB and Fáilte Ireland, the local authorities now have this initiative as an option to assist small local festivals all around the county.

"Despite their size, as a collective, these events made an impact last year, delivering tens of thousands of additional visitors - in many cases to parts which do not regularly receive tourists. I would urge anyone out there with a good idea or interesting event, which would help us to reach out to the diaspora, to get in touch with their local authority to see if they can assist".

Galway City Council in collaboration with its partners is providing a total fund of €30,000 to support local community-based events and festivals this year.

Commenting on the initiative, Galway City Council Chief Executive, Brendan McGrath said "Every year we support many festivals, facilitate forums and engage with citizens to support them in community events. Last year a number of successful events took place within the City under this Diaspora initiative and I am confident that we can build on that success".

The amount awarded will be based on the number of overseas visitors attending events. The minimum offered is €500 and the maximum €3,000. Galway City Council are seeking applications for support from local community events, with a closing date of 31st March 2015.
