Galway Bike Festival will take place in tandem with National Bike Week over the period June 14 to June 22, 2014. In support of this now annual festival, Galway City and County Councils invite applications from organisations wishing to host a cycling event or initiative during the festival. Festival coordinators highlight that last year more than 30 different cycling events took place including numerous family friendly cycles, children's bike racing, mountain biking, bike orienteering, a bike fest film night, accessible cycling, cycle to work events and heritage cycles. Feedback received from event organisers consistently highlight positive spin offs particularly in terms of youth and community development, road safety, increased awareness of the health benefits of cycling and greater knowledge of the current and potential cycling tracks and routes in the City and County.

Funding of up to €500 is available to organisations wishing to host an event, which can be used to cover costs such as cycle training, face-painting, bike repairs, picnic refreshments and local fliers etc. Organisations interested in becoming involved need to submit an application form, prior to the deadline of March 14, 2014. Submissions received will be assessed by reference to the strength of the application in terms of expected number of participants and promotional methods. Organisers wish to highlight that, events which target new or lapsed cyclists are particularly welcome.

Commenting on the current call, Jim Molloy, Head, Galway Transportation Unit stated: "the potential to significantly increase cycling in Galway City over and above other urban areas is widely acknowledged given the high proportion of our population that reside within short cycling distances of work or education. Galway Bike Festival provides an opportunity for people of all ages to rediscover the many benefits of cycling through the wide variety of cycling events that will be on offer in June."

Further details on the forthcoming festival can be obtained by contacting Galway City Council at: (091) 894324 or Galway County Council at: (091) 509309.

Féile Rothaíochta na Gaillimhe: Imeachtaí Rothaíochta á Lorg

Beidh Féile Rothaíochta na Gaillimhe ar siúl ag an am céanna leis an Seachtain Náisiúnta Rothaíochta idir an 14 Meitheamh agus an 22 Meitheamh, 2014. Chun tacú leis an bhféile bhliantúil sin anois, tá Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe agus Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe ag lorg iarratais ó eagraíochtaí ar mian leo imeacht nó ócáid rothaíochta a eagrú le linn na féile. Tá sé tugtha le fios ag comhordaitheoirí go raibh 30 ócáid rothaíochta éagsúla ar siúl anuraidh, lena n-áirítear ócáidí rothaíochta don teaghlach ar fad, rásaíocht rothar do leanaí, rothaíocht sléibhe, treoleanúint rothaíochta, oíche scannán don fhéile rothaíochta, imeachtaí rothaíochta chun na hoibre agus rothaíochtaí oidhreachta. De réir an eolais atá faighte ar ais ag eagraitheoirí na n-imeachtaí is léir go raibh tionchar an-dearfach ag na himeachtaí go háirithe ó thaobh an óige agus forbairt pobail, sábháilteacht ar bhóithre, níos mó tuisceana ar na buntáistí sláintiúla atá le rothaíocht agus eolas níos fearr ar na rianta agus ar na bealaí rothaíochta atá i gCathair agus i gContae na Gaillimhe.

Tá maoiniú suas le €500 ar fáil d'eagraíochtaí ar mian leo ócáid a eagrú, agus féadfar an t-airgead sin a úsáid chun costais a chlúdach mar oiliúint rothaíochta, péinteáil aghaidhe, deisiú rothar, sólaistí picnice agus bileoga eolais áitiúla etc. Beidh ar eagraíochtaí ar mian leo a bheith páirteach foirm iarratais a chur isteach, roimh an sprioc-am an 14 Márta, 2014. Déanfar aighneachtaí a fhaightear a mheas de réir an eolais a bheidh ar na hiarratais ó thaobh an líon daoine a cheaptar a bheidh rannpháirteach agus na modhanna chur chun cinn a bheidh in úsáid. Is mian le lucht eagraithe a thabhairt le fios go gcuirfear fáilte ar leith roimh imeachtaí a spreagfaidh rothaithe nua nó daoine nach raibh ar an rothar le fada.

Bhí an méid seo a leanas le rá ag Jim Molloy, Ceann Aonad Iompair na Gaillimhe faoina bhfuil i gceist leis an iarratas reatha: "tá deis iontach againn cur leis an líon daoine a bhíonn ag rothaíocht i gCathair na Gaillimhe thar cheantair uirbeach eile mar go bhfuil cion ard den daonra sa chathair ina gcónaí laistigh d'achar rothaíochta gearr óna gcuid oibre nó ó chúrsaí oideachais. Tugann Féile Rothaíochta na Gaillimhe deis do dhaoine idir óg agus sean na buntáistí éagsúla atá ag an rothaíocht a bhrath dóibh féin trí na himeachtaí rothaíochta éagsúla a bheidh ar fáil i mí an Mheithimh."

Is féidir tuilleadh eolais ar an bhféile atá ag teacht chun cinn a fháil ach dul i dteagmháil le Comhairle Cathrach na Gaillimhe: (091) 894324 nó le Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe: (091) 509309.
