Minister Coveney brings Rebuilding Ireland Roadshow to Galway

Today, (23 September 2016), Mr Simon Coveney T.D., Minister for Housing, Planning, community and Local Government, visited Galway in order to further promote the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland – Action Plan for Housing and Homelessness, which was launched 19 July 2016. This follows the national launch yesterday of Pillar One, which provides for early solutions to address homelessness, under the cross-Government plan.

Central to his visit is the continued focus on the implementation of the Rebuilding Ireland plan in both Galway City and County, and for the wider western region, where Galway City Council is the lead authority for the co-ordination of supports and services for homeless people.

Minister Coveney met with the Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Noel Larkin, and the Chairs of Galway City Council’s Strategic Policy Committees at a breakfast meeting in City Hall, where a range of issues were discussed.

At an event in Hotel Meyrick later in the morning, key stakeholders, responsible for housing provision in Galway, gathered for an overview of and discussion on Rebuilding Ireland, with a particular focus on what it will mean for Galway City and County, with presentations from Mr Brendan McGrath, Chief Executive, Galway City Council; Mr Kevin Kelly, Chief Executive, Galway County Council and Ms Rosalind Carroll, Director of the Residential Tenancies Board.

Minister Coveney reaffirmed his full commitment to Rebuilding Ireland, stating that he will “spare no effort in supporting local authorities, approved housing bodies and all stakeholders in doing what they do best in providing homes for many individuals and families whose housing needs remain unfulfilled.”
