The Galway City Development Board was established in March 2000, sparked by the Government’s commitment to the renewal of local government.
In effect, this 1996 initiative entitled 'Better Local Government' sought to reinvigorate local government by generating greater co-ordination between local government and local development, thereby integrating and fusing systems of local service delivery.

The primary task given to the Board was to produce a ten year economic, social and cultural strategy for Galway City by early 2002 and oversee its implementation.
In 2002, the Galway City Development Board launched ‘Gaillimh! Beo agus Bríomhar’ which is the Strategy for Economic, Social and Cultural Development and it sets out goals and objectives for the city up to 2012.
