Work commenced on the new composting facility at Carrowbrowne in 2002. The facility received substantial financial support from the Department of the Environment and Local Government under the Waste Management Infrastructure Grants Scheme which is a scheme sponsored by the National Development Plan and the European Union Structural Funds.
Following the receipt of the EPA Waste Licence the operation at the facility commenced on 1st December 2003 and the site is now fully operational.
The site is licensed to accept 9,500 tonnes of biodegradable waste annually and forms an integral part of the waste management infrastructure for Galway City.
The operation of the facility is in strict compliance with the licences regulations and regular monitoring is carried out and reported to the EPA.
Galway City Council’s household waste management scheme is leading the way in the latest methods of recycling by Composting biodegradable waste of over 16,000 householders and a number of private waste collectors.
