Local Agenda 21

The international plan to implement sustainable development is often referred to as Local Agenda 21 or LA21 (following the Earth Summit in Rio where it was drawn up in 1992).

Sustainable development is often defined as:

"Development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

Local Agenda 21 is part of the process of defining and articulating sustainable development considerations at a local/regional level and identifying how they can be pursued.

Agenda 21 requires action at a number of levels:

LA21 Environment Partnership Fund

Local Authorities have an important role to play in implementing the principles of sustainable development and in recognition of this, one of the projects which the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government have funded on an annual basis is the LA21 Environment Partnership Fund.

Many community groups, schools and voluntary agencies in Galway City have been able to benefit from this funding over the past number of years.

Details of the LA21 Environmental Partnership Fund are announced usually around August and applications have generally to be submitted by early October.

Each year notices are placed in local papers to let members of the community know that they can apply for funding.
