International Natural Heritage Conservation Areas

Under E.U. Legislation, certain areas within the city have been designated as habitats of international importance.

These designations seek to protect environmentally sensitive habitats and wildlife and
avoid habitat fragmentation while encouraging biodiversity in the urban area.

The designated international conservation areas in the city are as follows:

Galway Bay Complex Marine
Lough Corrib Complex
Special Protection Area
For protection of birds
Inner Galway Bay SPA.
