Improvement Works Lieu of Housing
Under this scheme Galway City Council can improve or extend your existing house to eliminate defects or to provide additional accommodation where it is necessary to eliminate overcrowding, instead of providing you with another house.
To Qualify:
For you to qualify you must be:
- Person whose application for housing with Galway City Council has been approved
- Tenant or tenant purchaser who wishes to move to a privately owned house and to return your present house to the City Council
or
- Tenant for more than one year of a house provided by a Voluntary Housing body under the Rental Subsidy Scheme and who wishes to move to a privately owned house and to return your present to the Body.
- A weekly or monthly charge in the form of rent related to your means is charged.
Applicants should note that if you have been approved for the carrying out of works of this nature and your housing needs are met you will be removed from the Housing List.

The following documentation should be attached to each fully complete application form:
- P.60 Certificate for previous tax year for P.A.Y.E. applicants
- P.21 Balancing Statement from tax office for previous tax year for P.A.Y.E. applicants (You will need a copy of your P60 when applying for this statement)
- Three most recent consecutive payslips
- Proof of Social Welfare payments received for previous tax year for Social Welfare recipients
- Self-employed applicants should attach their most recent Profit & Loss Account & Balance Sheet with Notice of Assessment.
- Copy of Birth Certificate for each applicant and dependants
- 2 letters of refusal to grant a loan from 2 separate lending institutions, e.g. bank, building society, credit union etc.
- Copy of statement from Lending Institution showing evidence of savings and / or loans outstanding.
