A License is required for the placement of Street Furniture (tables, chairs etc.) and other appliances / structures on the public footpath / street.
The City Council recognises that street furniture and goods in appropriate locations can add vibrancy to those areas, contribute to the atmosphere, and enhance the attractiveness and physical character of the City.

An application for a licence for the placement of tables and chairs andother appliances on the public footpath should be made to the Planning Section, in Galway City Council.
Galway City Council will process applications within 4 weeks of date of receipt of application.
Each licence granted shall include a set of conditions and shall issue for a maximum of one year. The period of the licence will be as set out on the licence.
A change of use of the licensed area shall require a new application for a licence.
The licence is personal to the licensee and is non-transferable.
The granting of a licence does not automatically guarantee renewal for the following year.
Applications or renewal applications should be made at a minimum of 4 weeks in advance of period that licence is being sought.

Under Section 254 – Any person may, in relation to the granting,refusing, withdrawing or continuing of a licence or to the conditions specified by the planning authority for such a licence, appeal to An Bord Pleanala.
An appeal may be made any time after a decision is given by the planning authority - there is no time limit.
