Clamping and Towing

Clamping and Towing

New measures with regard to clamping and towing were brought about under the Traffic Management Procedures for Galway City Council Administrative Area  so as to reduce the occurrences of clamping.

Pay and Display Clamping

• Expired Ticket: No Clamp will be applied to an expired ticket
• Non Payment: In this case the motorist is allowed a "grace time" of 10 minutes after which time the motorist is liable for a clamp

Clamping in On-Street Areas where Parking is Not Permitted or is Restricted

Examples of these categories include illegal parking in such areas as disabled parking bays, bus bays, clearways, single yellow lines, median strips and pedestrian crossings.

In these cases clamping may be applied as a deterrent, with tow-away to be applied where there is an obstruction.

There is No Grace Period in these cases.

Clamping in Short Term and Long Term Car Parks

Electronic Barrier Systems are to be installed in the City Council surface car parks. Until these are errected the following Enforcement will be in place:

• No Ticket: Grace Period of 10 minutes will be given before clamp is applied
• Expired Ticket:
  • If the expired time is less than 1 hour then a clamp can be applied and a €20 release fee applies
  • If the expired time is more than 1 hour then a clamp can be applied and an €80 release fee applies

Parking in the Galway Dockland Area in Galway City

Parking in the area around Bothar na Long, Dock Road and part of Dock Street, ending at Forthill Street, is controlled by the Harbour Authority and not by Galway City Council.

When parking in this area you should ensure that you have the appropriate ticket.

Private Estates

Private Estates may also employ clampers to control the parking in a particular private area and these are not governed by Galway City Council.
