Road Opening Licences
The Roads Section in Galway City Council deals with the issuing of Road Opening Licences.
A 'Road' includes footpath, verges and carriageway.
A Road Opening Licence is required for:
- Connection to Water Main
- Connection to Sewer
- ESB
- Telecom
- Pipelaying etc.
There is a new Road Opening Licence Policy effective from 1st October 2008. This includes a revised Schedule of Fees. All fees and deposits must be paid to Galway City Council prior to the licence being granted and the City Council require a minimum of 3 weeks advance notice.

An Application form should be completed in full along with the following documents:
- Relevant Permits
- Ordinance Survey Map indicating the location.
- A copy of Public Liability Insurance Policy
- A copy of Employer Liabililty Insurance
- If the proposed works restricts traffic, a traffic management plan may be required indicating the measures which will be taken to facilitate the safe flow of traffic including pedestrians.
These should be returned to:
Roads Section,
Galway City Council,
City Hall,
College Road,
Galway.
Applicants should also note:
- Advance notice of 3 working days is required before the work commences.
- The licensee is also required to notify the fire, ambulance, gardaĆ and public transport services of any proposed disruption to traffic routes.
- The licensee is also responsible for the maintenance of the temporary restoration until such time as the permanent restoration is carried out.
