Waste management is widely recognised as one of the most problematic issues facing Ireland’s environment. Waste generation is at an unsustainably high level in this country and actions must be taken, at a national level, to combat this problem.
Galway City has always been to the forefront of waste management in this country.
In 2001, Galway City Council became the first local authority in Ireland to introduce a segregated (3 bin) waste collection scheme. This scheme involves a household kerbside collection service of:

Introduction of this household recycling and waste management scheme led to a significant increase in recycling rates in the city and currently, over 54% of all household waste is recycled.
This is the highest recycling rate in the country and considerably higher than the national average of 21%.
To further advance Galway City’s waste management strategies, Galway City Council introduced a Pay-by-Weight waste collection and disposal service to it’s customers in January 2007.
Pay by weight is an example of a user related refuse charge and simply means that each customers refuse costs are related to the weight of waste they present for collection.
This approach to household waste management has many advantages for the city and for the customer.
