The Mutton Island wastewater treatment plant upgrade is required to ensure that sewage generated in Galway City is treated and disposed of in a sustainable manner over the coming years. This project is one element of the Galway Main Drainage - Stage 3 Project.
The rapid growth of the city means that Mutton Island Wastewater Treatment Plant is now nearing its design capacity, and with growth projected to continue there is a requirement to increase treatment capacity to cater for both residential and industrial expansion in the area.
It is possible to upgrade the capacity of the Mutton Island treatment plant to accommodate this growth in the short term.
This option has been selected as there is no need for any additional land-take and, since it uses existing sewerage and discharge infrastructure, it minimizes construction disturbance.
