Work to commence on Moneenageisha Junction

20 March 2009

Road works to facilitate the traffic management measures at Moneenageisha junction will begin during the week beginning Monday 23rd March 2009. The Ffrench roundabout at Moneenageisha will be replaced with a signal controlled junction.

The expected programme of works is approximately 5 weeks in duration and it is anticipated that the new signalised junction will be in place in advance of the Volvo Ocean Race, which begins on May 23 of this year.

During these works some traffic delays will occur. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route where possible.

Once in place the signal controlled junction will offer immediate benefits to pedestrians, and cyclists as the junction will provide fully controlled crossings for pedestrians on all arms of the junction and advanced stop lines for cyclists. In addition, this new signalised junction which stems from the recommendations contained in the Galway Strategic Bus Study (2007) will yield distinct advantages in terms of bus priority when incorporated into an Urban Traffic Control Centre for the City.

Head of Galway Transportation Unit, Joe Tansey explained that this project forms a natural extension to the works currently underway in relation to the rollout of the outbound bus lane on the Dublin Road. In addition, it represents a vital element of our overall plan to significantly enhance traffic movement through the City by replacing a number of roundabouts with signalised junctions. By doing so, the Urban Traffic Control Centre, which will be accommodated in City Hall will have the capacity to centrally coordinate and significantly improve traffic movements in the City. Road users will experience the full benefit of this work, when this critical infrastructure is in place.
