Galway City Council has recently signed a 15 year contract with Clearchannel Ireland Limited which will see new high quality bus shelters installed at selected locations across the city.
Commenting on the contract, Mr Joe Tansey, Head of Galway Transportation Unit stated that:
"Galway City is heavily dependant on private transport for travel to work and schools with only 4% of commuters regularly using public transport and the provision of new high quality bus shelters across the city will improve the commuting experience for thousands of bus customers along a busy corridor. The signing of this 15 year contract builds on the ongoing initiative of the Galway Transportation Unit to enhance bus service throughout the city and improving local bus stops will help make public transportation an attractive option for residents."
Signing the contract are from left: Joe Considine Galway City Council, City Manager Joe MacGrath and Terry Buckley, Managing Director of Clear Channel Ireland Limited
Two of the busiest bus corridors in the city have been chosen as a starting point and details of the proposed bus shelters for Route 9 from Eyre Square to Parkmore Road on the East of the city and Route 33 from Eyre Square, to Ballymoneen Road on the west of the city are currently available for inspection in City Hall and members of the public can make submissions until Friday, July 31st 2009.
Construction is expected to begin this Autumn and the bus shelters are installed at no cost to Council, with the program funded through the use of advertising panels on some shelters while other shelters will display information and schedules on various bus operators servicing that particular route / stop.
