Public Consultation - Foreshore Licence Application

Notice is hereby given pursuant to Section 19 of the Foreshore Act, 1933 that Farice ehf has applied to the Minister of Housing, Local Government and Heritage for a Foreshore licence under Section 3 of the said Act for the main lay installation and construction works for the installation of the IRIS sub-sea fibre optic cable system from a landfall at Ballyloughane Strand, Galway to a landfall in Iceland. Farice ehf, a telecommunications company wholly owned by the Icelandic government, aim to provide high speed strategic international telecommunications connectivity from Galway on the west coast of Ireland to the capital city of Iceland, Reykjavik.

A copy of the application, and the relevant documents, maps, plans, and drawings, are available for inspection, between 2nd July 2021 and 1st August 2021, free of charge at:

  • Mill Street Garda Station, Mill Street, Galway City, H91 FX61, The relevant documentation are available for inspection at the public counter of Mill Street Garda Station (open 24 hours) or by appointment. Please make contact by telephone at 091 538000 or by email to gaillimh.ce@garda.ie  to make an appointment.
  • Galway City Council Planning Office, City Hall, College Road, Galway, H91 X4K8, The relevant documentation are available for inspection at the Planning Office of Galway City Council during its public opening hours from 09.30 am – 1.00pm daily (Mon - Fri).  Should it be necessary to visit the planning office, please make contact by telephone at 091 536599 or e-mail at planning@galwaycity.ie  to make an appointment in order to comply with Health & Safety of both the public and staff and to ensure compliance with social distancing measures currently in place. Please note that members of the public visiting the Planning Department will be asked to provide information for the purposes of contact tracing. 
  • Galway City Library Hynes Buildings, St Augustine Street, Galway, H91 R6WF, The relevant documentation are available for inspection at Galway City Library, during public opening hours - Tuesday to Saturday inclusive: 10.30 am to 1.00pm and 2.00 pm to 5.00 pm.   Current Restrictions only allow for a viewing time of 15 minutes but by appointment a longer viewing time may be arranged. Please make contact by telephone at 091 509094 or by email to city@galwaylibrary.ie  to make an appointment.

Any person who wishes to make an objection to, or a representation in respect of the grant of the lease/licence sought as part of this public consultation should do so in writing, giving reasons, between 2nd July 2021 and 1st August 2021 (quoting ref: FS007246) to the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Foreshore Section, Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Newtown Road, Wexford, Co. Wexford or foreshore@housing.gov.ie. The closing date for submissions is close of business (17.30) on 1st August 2021. 

Please be advised all queries in relation to this application must go directly to the Foreshore Section in Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage. 

All objections and representations received will be forwarded to the applicant for comment prior to any decision being made in the matter. Material upon which the Minster shall determine this application may be published on the Department’s website.
