The new Multi-Use Games Area in Rahoon has been officially named in honour of Eugene Dunleavy, sportsman, all-Ireland GAA winner, and a teacher who inspired a love of sport in hundreds of young men over his career. The naming was celebrated by the former Mayor of the City of Galway, Cllr Peter Keane, Eugene’s wife Mary, and his daughters Valerie and Carol, at a naming ceremony in May 2025.

Henry Street Playground was officially named last week (Friday 20 June 2025) in honour of former Mayor of the City of Galway, Mary Byrne (1917-2004) - who was the first female Mayor of Galway, and was also a resident of Henry Street.

Councillor Mike Cubbard was elected as Mayor of the City of Galway at the Galway City Council AGM in City Hall on Friday 20 June 2024, becoming the 71st person to hold the honour of the First Citizen of Galway City.

Galway City Council has announced funding approvals under three schemes for 2025: the Local Enhancement Programme, Local Community Festival Grants, and the CAIRDE Grant.
