St. Patrick’s Day Festival set to return to Galway City’s streets

- Galway City Council issues a call-out for applications to be involved

Following the cancellation of the St. Patrick’s Day Parades in 2020 and 2021, this year’s festival will make a long-awaited return to the streets of Galway with a full outdoor programme offering a feast of family entertainment.

Plans are currently being developed for a special outdoor village with vintage amusements and family activities that will take place throughout the long weekend alongside a new spectacular ‘Greening’ initiative and much more. The highlight of the festival, will be the return of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Thursday, March 17th.

Speaking on the preparations for the Festival, Patricia Philbin, Director of Services Galway City Council, said:

“As the majority of COVID-19 restrictions are eased, the St. Patrick’s Day Festival will be one of the first real opportunities to gather together and celebrate as a community once again and put on display the vast abundance of creative and artistic ability in Galway City. We are encouraging as many groups as possible to get involved.”

After consultation with the emergency services, the parade will once again begin in the shadow of the Galway Cathedral. Winding its way up University Road, onto the Salmon Weir Bridge and turning right onto Eglinton Street it will meander onto Williamsgate Street and past the official viewing stand in Eyre Square before finishing on Prospect Hill and Bóthar na mBan.

Galway City Council is now calling for applications for the parade – which will be a carnival Parade. Therefore, entries involving costumes, performance, audience interaction, and those having musical accompaniment, are strongly encouraged:
