The Irish Language Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) of Galway City Council, in collaboration with local community stakeholders, has launched a landmark initiative to identify, map and celebrate the city’s historic urban Gaeltacht areas. ‘An Ghaeltacht’ signs have been installed at the boundaries of eight Gaeltacht townlands within Galway City boundaries – highlighting Irish-speaking regions where the government officially recognises Gaeilge as the primary vernacular language.
Droichead an Dóchais, Galway’s iconic pedestrian and cycle bridge, has been shortlisted for a prestigious international engineering award. The bridge, which opened in May 2023, is among just eight projects in the running for the International Bridge Project of the Year award at the upcoming New Civil Engineer Bridges Awards in London. It represents further recognition for Droichead an Dóchais, which offers a safe, comfortable crossing of the River Corrib for thousands of people each day and has already become a widely recognised landmark in Galway.
The Mayor of the City of Galway, Councillor Peter Keane, and Elected Members of Galway City Council participated in a moving remembrance ceremony to honour the Irish men and women who died in past wars or on service with the United Nations Peacekeeping, at the Galway City ceremony for the National Day of Commemoration in the University of Galway on Sunday 14 July 2024.
