Strategic Policy Committees
Strategic Policy Committees (SPCs) bring together elected members (Councillors), and people actively working with social partners and other sectoral interests to develop and review policies related to Council services. Final policy decisions, however, rest with the full Council acting as a body.
Galway City Council has six Strategic Policy Committees (SPCs) and they are chaired by an Elected Councillor. The six SPCs are detailed individually below. Click on an individual SPC to see full details about members, functions and latest meeting documents. External Representatives are drawn from the following sectoral interests: Business/Commercial; Development/Construction and Trade Unions. The sectoral/community representatives are drawn from the membership of the Galway City Community Network (Public Participation Network). Strategic Policy Committees were established following the June 2024 Local Elections in line with revised guidelines from the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. SPCs are not concerned with individual representational or operational issues. Read about the Transparency Code and see other general SPC documents further below
Transparency Code
Section 5(7) of the Regulation of Lobbying Act 2015 provides that the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform shall prepare and publish a code, to be known as the "Transparency Code", which sets out how certain relevant public bodies, such as ministerial advisory groups, may conduct their activities in a transparent way. By adhering to the Transparency Code, communications within these bodies would meet the exemption from the requirement to register and report on lobbying activities. Accordingly, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform has prepared a Transparency Code.Accordingly, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform has prepared a Transparency Code.
