Senior representatives and Elected Members of Galway City Council welcomed Taoiseach Micheál Martin to Galway City recently (30.05.2025), as part of a visit to the site of the new Crown Square Campus and 345 new homes being developed by the LDA, at Crown Square in Mervue.
The Taoiseach presided over the laying of a ceremonial foundation stone at a development that will deliver 310 Cost Rental apartments, with the remaining 35 allocated for social housing. Housing is a key priority for Galway City Council, with this development by the LDA unlocking a much-needed landbank for homes, as part of a 12.7 acre mixed use development just 2.4km from the city centre, with excellent public transport links.
The Taoiseach was briefed about Galway City Council’s housing priority projects submitted to the National Programme for Government – including a further 200 homes at Dyke Road; a new urban quarter with the potential for 750 affordable and social homes at Sandy Road; and enabling development of Ardaun and Murrough.
Other key priorities requiring national investment for Galway City to deliver on targets in the National Development Plan include: the N6 Galway City Ring Road; BusConnects Galway; Galway City Flood Defence Scheme (Coirib go Cósta); funding model; pilot Tourist Bed Night Tax; wastewater infrastructure; the Clifden Railway Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge; cultural infrastructure fund; and Galway Port redevelopment.
This investment programme by National Government is vital to ensuring Galway City - and the region - deliver on targets in the National Development Plan,
Galway City Council and Galway County Council are collaborating to ensure this investment, with Galway the largest urban centre in the Northern and Western Regional Assembly area, serving as a vital catalyst for economic grown and competitiveness in the region, while making a substantial contribution to GDP. The Taoiseach has invited the two Chief Executives (Leonard Cleary and Liam Conneally) to meet with him in Dublin to discuss the proposed strategic infrastructure and investment projects in Galway.
